HLTH 82 - Field Experience in Healthcare Interpreting - Stage 5 - Nora Goodfriend-Koven

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
  • External (outside CCSF) data (such as licensing exam and placement rates)
Assessment DescriptionAssessment included a combination of self-assessments, internship placement and evaluation forms, and other work performed. Students were required to identify areas of strength and challenge (personal learning objectives), and to work towards improving their overall practice of interpreting. These results were quantified using a point system. External data was provided by site-supervisors at local hospitals and clinics who evaluated each student's performance each time s/he interpreted, and also over-all performance as a possible employee.

Data Summary90% of all students achieved a score of 80% or higher, over-all on all areas assessed.
Analysis SummaryAll assignments for HLTH 82 were used to assess all of the student learning objectives. The criteria was to achieve a level of 80% of the class receiving a score of 80% or higher. This goal was surpassed - indicating that students are work-place ready after having completed this course. Some of the specific assignments did not achieve the hoped-for passing rate, however none were less than 70% of the students achieving 80% scores or higher.
Next Steps PlannedIn spring 2013 (the next time this course will be taught); some of the assignments and criteria will be revised to more exactly evaluate each SLO - hopefully making the data-gathering procedure a little less cumbersome.

Tentative Future Plans

TermSpring 2014
Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsFurther tailoring of assignments to better match the stated outcomes will assist in easier assessment. The actual outcomes should be revised to better match the course itself; however that may wait until Fall 2014.
