HUM 8 - Philosophies of Religion - Stage 5 - Liss

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Course outline review
Assessment DescriptionOur work on the Humanities 8 Course Outline and attendant SLOs goes back to January 2010. We have met and exchanged e-mails many times, discussing what the course should achieve and how. The course outline has been submitted to the Campus Curriculum Committee, and we hope to have it approved on September 11, 2013.

In the Spring 2013 semester, we entered a second loop of assessment by creating a common question to be administered

Data Summary2010-2013: The Course Outline review from 2010-2013 was educational and productive for us. All instructors (Liss, Keast, McGuire, Georgiou, and Hendrickson) offered their thoughts on their teaching processes and how these related to the revision of the SLOs.

Spring 2013: The aggregate grade across four sections of the class on the Islam paragraph-length response was 87.2%.
Analysis Summary2010-2013: We found that revisiting the outcomes helped focus the course on more measurable goals. Although there is still much about a Humanities course that cannot be quantified, we found that having the goals helped us create a spine for the course and how students would be evaluated, highlighting certain vocabulary and specific passages from the reading.

Spring 2013: We consider 80% to be satisfactory and have a goal of 85% for these kinds of responses. So our a result of 87.2% exceeded expectations.
Next Steps Planned2010-2013: We looked forward to assessment of the Learning Outcomes through hard data from common questions.

Spring 2013: We consider the assessment of SLO B in Spring 2013 to be a success. The next time we assess this course, we will move on to other SLOs since B seems to be working as intended.
