NURS 56 - Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing - Stage 5 - Erin Cunningham

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Classroom response systems (such as iClickers or computers)
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
  • Feedback from collaboration with other departments
  • External (outside CCSF) data (such as licensing exam and placement rates)
Assessment DescriptionConducted class room response systems using Iclickers at the end of the semester about medication administration safety in the clinical setting. Also conducted paper survey at the end of the first section of the course about safety.

Surveys were conducted before and after starting clinical rotations. The surveys asked students for feedback indicating if they felt out-of-practice to start clinical again and what would help prepare them better. Overwhelmingly the students felt unprepared to begin their rotations. Based on our previous Spring semester surveys we prepared an orientation Skills lab addressing the students reported areas of weakness. After the students started their clinical rotations we surveyed them again to see if the skills lab prep better prepared them for the actual clinical experience and compared them to the previous group who had no skills prep prior to going to their clinical. There was a clear and overwhelming difference in the feeling of 'confidence, knowledge, ability to begin clinicals in the group that spent a day in skills lab reviewing needed and rusty skills prior to starting clinical rotation. Feedback from preceptors stated that they noted this group of students seemed better prepared that previous groups. During the Skills prep week the students spent time doing low and high fidelity simulations incorporating clinical scenarios that assisted them in their psychomotor, and nursing process skills necessary helping them get ready for their capstone semester. We will continue to collect data via student questionnaires, faculty observations, professional resources, and from clinical mentor/preceptor surveys to continue determining what scenarios and skills are needed to better prepare the students for their final transition of excellent nursing student to prelicensure novice nurse.

Data Summary100% of the students surveyed expressed a need to practice some skills prior to starting their clinical rotations. 96% felt 'rusty' 'unprepared' because they had been away from med-surg for a semester in OB/and Psych. 100% felt the skills lab helped prepare them. Great feedback was given on how to improve the skills orientation lab (more practice with organizing and time management with multiple patients, more practice giving and receiving report, exposure to the computer systems they will be using in the clinical setting, more experience with chest tubes, medication administration).

With regards to clinical performance assessed based on the students' self evaluation and feedback from both the preceptor and the faculty of records using a standardized evaluation form, all the students passed the clinical portion of Nursing 56. Also , as a department, we keep a close eye on the NCLEX pass rates for our students and are routinely reported in our monthly faculty meetings.
Analysis SummaryPracticing clinical skills in areas that the students and faculty identify as needing remediation and review had a positive outcome in overall clinical performance based on student, preceptor, and instructor observation and feedback. 100% of students expressed that having a refresher orientation skills lab helped them feel more confident and prepared to return to their med-surg clinical rotations.

Again, with regards to clinical performance, our pass rate for this semester was 100 %. However, by the end of next Spring semester 2014 , we are planning to review our clinical evaluation form so that it incorporates and reflects components of the QSEN criteria.
Next Steps PlannedWe will continued to dialog with students, preceptors, and faculty to create an excellent pre-clinical review program for our Nursing 56 Capstone students entering their final med-surg rotations.

Our plan for the following semesters is to incorporate the use of more technology to enhance clinical performance. We will continue to utilize Iclickers and Monk and paper surveys. We are also planning to review our clinical evaluation form.

We also plan to incorporate interdepartmental collaboration in simulation to enhance student learning outcomes. We will pilot with DMI to do a simulation and debriefing together in Fall 2013.
