In a student survey:

30% of the students reported that they find the small groups more conducive to communication with other student.

35% of the students reported that they find small groups to be less conducive to communication with other students.

35% of the students reported that it made no difference to them.
Analysis SummaryMost students in the small group setting received either zero or only one response. There were few on-going discussions in the discussion threads compared with the usual whole class group setting.

70% or most students preferred the larger group setting or found that there was no difference.

Several students expressed through email tome that they small groups left them less choice about who they would want to respond to. They indicated that larger groups allowed for a greater variety of interesting posts.
Next Steps PlannedIncrease the group sizes to about twenty students as opposed to six or seven per group. This number has fewer students in a group than the whole class, which can make group communication less personal. But it may be enough to allow for students to have a greater number and more of a variety of posts to reply to before the nearing of the forum deadline at the end of the week.
