NURS 53 - Maternal/Newborn Nursing - Stage 5 - Sue Longacre

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student satisfaction surveys
  • Classroom response systems (such as iClickers or computers)
  • External (outside CCSF) data (such as licensing exam and placement rates)
Assessment Description1. Analyzed results of unit exams based on SLOs for each exam

2. Two written assignments on patient case studies, using an SLO rubric available to students and faculty

3. Faculty directly observed students in the high fidelity human simulator exercises

4. Student satisfaction surveys at the end of the semester

5. iClickers were used to present the newborn nursing unit. Responses on the iClickers were compared to exam results.

6. Reviewed data on the CCSF RN graduates success rate with the registered nursing licensure exam (NCLEX)

Face-to-face meetings

Data Summary1. The majority of students passed the unit exams.

2. Scores on the patient case studies demonstrated an improvement on the 2nd case study compared to the first case study.

3. Faculty feedback from the human simulator exercise was extremely positive that via the exercise, debriefing, and faculty feedback students met the SLOs for each simulator exercise.

4. Student satisfaction surveys were overwhelmingly positive.

5. The first time pass rate for NCLEX needs to be either at the state level or above.
Analysis Summary1. Students have achieved the outcome if they pass the unit exams with a score of 75% or higher. A significant majority of students reached or exceeded this score.

2. Grades on the patient case studies written assignments of 75% or higher indicate the student has met the SLOs. The vast majority of students met the score of 75% or higher. 45% of the students exhibited proficiency by scoring 96%-100% on this assignment.

3. All students and faculty participated in the human simulator exercise. The faculty observations were that by the end of the debriefing following each simulation exercise the SLOs were met.

4. For each survey question, 95% of the respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the course SLOs were met.

5. The first time pass rate for ADN students in California is 90%, as reported by the California Board of Registered Nursing. The most recent data demonstrates CCSF RN grads first time pass rate as 92.5%.
Next Steps PlannedSpring 2013, using Perkins/VTEA funds, the department is purchasing an iSimulator program that uses iPads to simulate a patient's monitor screen. The faculty and student feedback from the students' clinical hours, written patient care assignments and human simulator exercise has been positive. Nursing 53 is going to increase the amount of case studies done during the classroom time. Beginning fall semester 2013, the iSimulator program will be used during class time to simulate a patient care experience.

Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsWill introduce the iSimulator program to increase the amount and validity of case studies during class time. Will continue to assess outcomes and make changes as needed.
