SPCH 5 - Intercultural Communication - Stage 5 - Nathan Steele

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
Assessment Description10 student final projects were randomly selected, analyzed, and then coded to indicate a student's level of proficiency with regard to specific SLOs. The final project involves research, written work, and a speech. Because this assignment is a culminating project, and can address all or most of the course SLOs, it provides data that can assess students' achievement of multiple course goals.

Data SummarySLO E: 60% of students effectively defined and applied intercultural communication concepts/theories in their Intercultural Investigation Projects. 20% of students satisfactorily achieved this SLO by defining and applying concepts without generating enough detail or succeeding only in their oral or written communication of these ideas. The final 20% provided no explanation or application of course concepts, or incorrectly defined or misapplied concepts.
Analysis Summary4 out of 5 students demonstrated achievement of SLO E by clearly and accurately describing 3-4 intercultural communication concepts and also effectively applying said concepts to personal experience and/or popular culture texts.
Next Steps PlannedNext semester, this course will be developed as an online course; during this time additional testing materials and online activities will be aligned with course SLOs. An Insight shell will be developed to more closely and explicitly tie course tasks with course SLOs and also generate data for formative and summative assessment of SLOs.

Changes

DetailsAnalysis of assessment data revealed unproductive redundancy in the design of the SLOs themselves. SLOs were charted and then synthesized, combined, or otherwise refined from 14 SLOs into 5 sleeker ones. In April, 2013, an updated course outline was submitted and approved to reflect updated course outcomes and content.
