PHYC 2B - Intro to Physics - Stage 5 - Dack Lee

Assessment

Assessment Methods

Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs

Assessment DescriptionA 14-(multiple choice) question questionnaire was administered at the end of the semester.

For the Spring and Fall 2012 semesters the physics department used the same questionnaire for all lecture courses. While this was initially very useful in developing baselines, and looking at students across different courses, it is now time to become much more directed. For PHYC 2B a new questionnaire will be developed with all questions geared specifically to the PHYC 2B SLO's. This new questionnaire will be administered at the end of the Fall, 2013 semester.
Learning OutcomesSLO B) Apply vector mathematics to physics problems such as net electric field (both magnitude and direction) due to two or more point charges.

Data SummarySome of the results were disappointing. However, multiple-choice does not allow us to determine why incorrect answers were selected. Actually, we don't know how the correct answers were selected. This applies to SLO (B): Apply vector mathematics to physics problems such as net electric field (both magnitude and direction) due to two or more point charges. Specifically, please see question #7. There was a 5% improvement from the Spring of 2012.
Analysis SummaryWe will start designing a multiple-choice questionnaire with work shown by student to show his/her reasoning to obtain answer (ready for Fall 2013). Having pertinent questions is essential.
