ARCH 29B - Freehand Drawing - Stage 1 - Jerry Lum

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
Assessment DescriptionThrough class critques and individual desk critiques of student work newly generated for each class meeting, the instructor and students participated in assessing progress demonstrated in student work against the criteria for learning successes. Criteria included line quality, application of techniques, composition, contrast of values used, etc. that develop towards an accurate, credible, and compelling representations of drawing intentions. Since sustained practice with objectives leads to quality drawing, students are assessed in their ability to complete all assignments, including their final project; and their submittal of midterm and final portfolios. Portfolios are clear evidence of each student's development and learning for the entire semester.
Learning OutcomesStudent work was assessed for the following outcomes: ability to observe accurately and fully as documented in drawn work; successful applications of techniques introduced in class; unity and balance in composition of drawn elements; level of analysis in studied subjects; successful demonstration of form, structure, and context as represented in drawing; expressive qualities evoked from drawn work; and ability to develop a portfolio of work that is organized and complete that demonstrates measurable progress in understanding and application. Instruction focused on the ability to use freehand drawing in the service of design thinking as well as the ability to coordinate what is carefully observed and accurately represent what is seen and thought.

Data Summary95% of students achieved the course SLO's as demonstrated in their portfolio submittals. 75% of students achieved above average or better; 20% produced average work; and 5% produced below average work.
Analysis SummaryStudent work was assessed on how accurately they represented in drawn form the architectural and interior design subjects assigned, including accuracy in the application of perspective construction, shade and shadows to represent three-dimensional form and space; and the expressive impacts of natural and artificial light sources on the subjects represented. Ultimately, work was assessed in terms of believability and the level of craft applied.
Next Steps PlannedThe course instructor identified that no changes are needed to promote student learning outcomes. The department agrees!
Learning OutcomesDemonstrate skills & techniques for seeing and recording the built environment from images and on-site (subjects).

Apply freehand drawing as a tool to analyze architectural form, structure, and (environmental) context.

Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps

More DetailsTypically, each semester there are two sections of ARCH 29B taught by two different instructors. Our ongoing analysis and discussion of assessment data among the likely instructors who will be assigned to these sections will focus on developing and aligning best practices and pedagogy that will support effective student learning no matter who is teaching.
