ARCH 29A - Freehand Drawing - Stage 5 - Jerry Lum

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
Assessment DescriptionUsing the instructor provided photographic image, create architectural drawings using the following techniques: 1.) line only; 2.) chiaroscuro using line tone; and 3.) chiaroscuro using continuous tone.

Using rapid visualization techniques demonstrated by your instructor, apply these techniques to represent interesting spatial experiences encountered in your daily life, e.g. a cafe environment, riding public transportation, an outdoor experience in a public space, etc. Record time spent drawing and keep all construction lines visible. Try to capture the light qualities generated by either sunlight or artificial lighting by carefully observing the sizes, and proportional relationships of light and dark shapes.

Use sighting techniques to compose and capture accurate proportions of an instructor provided still life subject.

Apply textural techniques demonstrated to successfully represent an object or artifact with at least two different material surface qualities.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With
  • Instructors of the same course (at CCSF)
  • Faculty and staff within our department
  • Students
Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Wall exhibited student work
Data Summary"90% of students achieved successes in all course SLO's when working from a printed image"
Analysis SummaryA significant majority of students achieved a compelling level of work when using continuous tone techniques to produce literal representations of architectural form and space.

Less than a significant majority of students are able to produce the same from real life subjects.
Next Steps PlannedFoster increased communication between course instructors in order to refine course content and assessment.

Support and encourage instructors to exhibit student work to provoke more dialogue within the Department aimed at improving course instruction and SLO assessments.

Provide more opportunities for students to successfully develop and apply freehand drawing techniques to represent real life observations through repetitive practice.

Changes

DetailsTo assist students with the development of their rapid visualization techniques, a series of timed drawing sessions were incorporated into studio activities. As time allotted became shorter, students were provoked to prioritize and capture essentials more efficiently.

Additional exercises focused on creating thumbnail studies to explore compositional options; and diagramming to emphasize or explore one quality or feature over others.
