CS 260P - Linux Administration Projects - Stage 1 - Greg Boyd

Assessment

Assessment Methods

Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs

Assessment DescriptionAn assignment that spanned three weeks tested the first three SLOs of the course on kickstart installations. Completion of each of these tasks was measured as a percentage of students starting it. Students created a kickstart script by doing a basic installation, customized it, used it to do an automated install over the network, then repeated the task after adding post-install configuration tasks to the script.

Learning OutcomesA. Create a custom kickstart configuration file to perform an automated installation.

B. Revise default parameters of the installed system using the post-installation script.

C. Design and test an automated kickstart installation over NFS (Network File System), http, or ftp.

Data SummaryIn this first semester of the class, 18 students registered for the class. Of those

14 students were still in the class when the kickstart sequence began

12 created the custom kickstart script (SLO A)

11 did an automated installation (SLO C) using the kickstart script

9 customized it successfully (SLO B) in the post-install section.
Analysis SummarySLOs A and C were straightforward - either the custom kickstart script worked or it didn't. This was an iterative process - most students required several attempts.

SLO B was a bit more ad-hoc. There were a number of post-installation tasks required in the script. A student was deemed 'successful' if they accomplished 80% of these tasks.
Next Steps PlannedThis result was deemed adequate for the class and attention will be turned to other aspects of the course.

More DetailsFor Spring2014, some change to the course must be made, but these are not clear at this early date so they will not be discussed now. Over this summer, a few of the students who completed the course will be taking the certification exam, and their experiences will be invaluable input to the class' future direction.

The most important SLO of the course will be evaluated for the first time in Spring 2014:

E. Solve time-constrained administrative tasks on a Redhat-like system using only local documentation.
