Data SummaryAt least 80% of the students were able to correctly identify the difference between news stories and feature stories. Likewise 8 of the 10 students demonstrated solid aptitude in writing feature stories. Also, 80% of the students clearing understood the organizational structure of a feature story and the various elements that comprise it. Only 25% of the students demonstrated an ability to develeop and produce a feature suitable for publication.
Analysis SummaryA significant majority of students should meet two of three key student learning outcomes for the course -- differences between a news story and a feature story; basic structure and elements of a feature story. However, the ability to develop and produce a feature story suitable for publication within a semester of may be a bit unrealistic.
Next Steps PlannedWe will likely need to assess fi there is a need for new prerequisite. Although to re-evaluate whether we should expect that a student can produce a feature story suitable for publication. We may need to look at current feature writing course as simply introductory and create an advanced feature writing course that leads to publishing opportunities for students.
