Assessment Description | English 1C students wrote a summary based on a common reading. This assessment was done at the beginning of the semester without guidance or instruction in the classroom. Our purpose was to see how prepared 1C students are to write summaries at the beginning of the semester. Most students come to 1C from our sequence of composition classes, but some students are new to CCSF and have taken 1A (class leading to1C) at other colleges. |
Learning Outcomes | b. summarize complex texts accurately and succinctly c. assess assignments for appropriate form and response, with attention to academic discourse d. analyze arguments for logic, rhetorical force, and style through close textual reading f. choose appropriate rhetorical strategies and diction when composing and revising sentences for variety and effectiveness |

Data Summary | 1C students are prepared and teachable. We also learned we need to be more prescriptive when assigning summary writing and in providing more detailed guidelines in general. |
Analysis Summary | Students were able to identify the main ideas in the reading they summarized. Many were not able to independently identify implicit and supporting ideas. They also had trouble seeing logical relationships between supporting points. |
Next Steps Planned | We will change the assessment and the rubric to be more specific and prescriptive. We will offer modeling and practice in 1C classes when discussing implicit and supporting details. |
Learning Outcomes | Refer to previous answers. |

More Details | Fall semester 2013, we will assess Major Learning Outcome E: “Evaluate and incorporate primary and secondary sources using MLA style.” We have created a questionnaire to test MLA proficiency. The students will be quizzed at the beginning and the end of the semester. Andrea Sanelli, Paolo Sapienza, Karen Cox, Richard Simon, and Monica Bosson will assess their classes to assess whether we reach our Student Learning Outcome. |
