Data Summary | This semester there has been a significant retention problem due to student hardships such as family deaths and illnesses. Many students had to drop the class or were given Ws for lack of participation. Of the more than 50 students originally enrolled in BCST 160 A, B, C and BCST 165A, B 27, 37 students submitted completed resumes and general class assignments. 23 of those students remained fully active and committed to the class and completed all requirements. Of the 23 students who remained in the class, 17 students continued to refine their resumes and targeted their resumes to the internships they applied for and were awarded. |
Analysis Summary | 17 students did continue to work on and refine their resumes with very impressive results. These same students remained fully engaged with all aspects of the course. Six additional students submitted a resume, but didn’t continue to improve the document. These six had excellent internships in which they performed satisfactorily but didn’t fully complete all career related course requirements, It should be noted semester’s SLO assessment produced some unexpected results. As an instructor, I now see that I need to make it much clearer at the beginning of the semester during orientation sessions and via online discussion boards that full participation in the Internship and Career Related course materials and assignments is essential in order to remain enrolled in the class and in onsite internships. Particularly students who already had arranged internships prior to the first day of class fell behind in assignments, were then dropped from the class. They were notified three times, didn’t respond, ultimately had to leave their internships and admitted they hadn’t been checking in on the courses or related emails. Written materials make this clear (syllabus and other handouts) at the beginning of the semester and this was emphasized during course orientation sessions. |
Next Steps Planned | Next semester I will add a written assignment that addresses course requirements early in the semester that includes a contract and discussions re: questions as “What are my plans for regularly checking into this course and completing required assignments?. Online class retention issues will also be added to our first FLEX Fall Department Meeting for further discussion, brainstorming and problem-solving. |
