Data SummaryStudent performance on the assessment questions varied widely but closely mirrored the students' overall performance (i.e., the good students generally did better than the poor students). The assessment questions were difficult so very few students answered them completely correctly. See Math Department SLO webpages for further expansion. One assessment item indicated that many students are passing Calculus without understanding the order of operations between substitution and differentiation.
Analysis SummaryThe analysis did not indicate any need to modify the substance of the course being assessed (Math 130). We might need to modify Calculus I (Math 110A) a little. See Math Department SLO webpages for further details.
Next Steps PlannedOnly one section of this course (usually) is offered each semester. Next steps must wait until other faculty have taught it during an assessment cycle (namely, the fall semester).
Learning OutcomesThe assessment items targeted two course SLOs, one on standard linear algebra and vector space problems and another on solving ordinary and partial differential equations.

More DetailsSee Math Department SLO assessment guidelines on the Math Department SLO webpage. For Math 130, the individual instructors will have to coordinate across semesters, probably through the chair.

Additional Highlights

I feel that the most important outcome was the discovery that our Math 130 students were lacking a basic Calculus-level skill.
