PHYS 12 - Introduction to Human Physiology - Stage 5 - Joe Reyes

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionExamination and comparison of course quizzes and exams across sections. These quizzes were standardized across sections as to test for particular content. (in progress)

Redesigned criteria for evaluation of Lab Report assessment (in progress)

Student Survey of SLO's
Learning OutcomesDemonstrate the ability to define, use and explain the basic terminology and use the concepts of physiology.

Demonstrate the ability to use the basic laboratory skills and techniques and formulate procedures of elementary physiology.
Number of Sections~3
Number of Instructors3

Data Summary80% of our students were able to answer 8 out of 10 questions per quiz on a consistent basis. Midterm and Final exam showed a 70% of students answering 75% of questions correctly.

Student surveyed across each section showed that consistently that they were confident (a score of 4 and above) in proficiency at each of the prescribed SLO's for the course.
Analysis SummaryIt is clear from test scores and survey information that students were able to utilize the material presented in the course to analyze, manipulate and predict physiological outcomes.
Next Steps PlannedStudent Surveys will continue to be administered to assess the satisfaction of the students in our courses.

Faculty involved with this course are continuing to coordinate and assess the quiz and testing material, to better report how our SLO's are being addressed in our teachings.

Furthermore, more work is needed to revamp the expectations and grading of Lab Reports for this course.

It was clear from survey information that updating of our Lab Manual is needed. A greater focus on new, engaging, experiments; edits to descriptions and procedures of existing material in the lab report.
Learning OutcomesDemonstrate the ability to define, use and explain the basic terminology and use the concepts of physiology.

Demonstrate the ability to use the basic laboratory skills and techniques and formulate procedures of elementary physiology.

Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsContinue work of coordinating and standardizing quizzes and test to better assess reaching of outcomes across course sections.

Rework lab manual experiments and explanation section, by surveying students during semester on manual usefulness. Faculty discussion of this is ongoing.

Additional Highlights

The increased communication between the Faculty association with the course has been incredible. An open dialogue about student goals and achievement has been accelerated and bolstered by the revamping/discussion of SLO's implementation in the course.
