Data Summary | In fall, our assessment data (completed spring 2012) birthed the conclusion that very few distinctions exist between SPCH 11 and SPCH 1A. Course materials pulled from across SPCH 1A and SPCH 11 looked at instructional content to discern how to make the course distinct. |

Analysis Summary | All spring Flex meeting the department met to discuss what adjustment could be made to the course outline to make the basic course distinct from SPCH 1A. A productive discussion revolved around technology being used more in the elements class and less in the basic course, less theory in one versus the other. In the end, the faculty concluded that many instructors teaching SPCH 11 were teaching the course at a basic level. Some 1A classes resembled SPCH 11. The faculty concluded that we had a distinction without a difference and our students were better served by having more standardized instruction. |
---|
Next Steps Planned | The faculty voted to faze out instruction of SPCH 11 over the course of a few semesters and carefully monitor the impact of such a move on students that do not meet the SPCH 1A prerequisite. The department wants to concentrate its instructional efforts on the course that with the highest number of articulation agreements. |
