DSGN 105 - Survey of Collaborative Design - Stage 5 - Nadereh Degani
Assessment
Assessment Methods |
|
---|---|
Assessment Description | I was able to complete the assessment that the students required more direct examples of historically prominent art and design collaboration groups earlier in the semester, and needed more in depth discussions in class, before they could develop a concrete understanding of SLO A & B. Changes that were made to the DSGN 105 syllabus and due date requirements for assignments addressing SLO A & B, providing the students with at least one more additional week of in class lectures and discussions, before expecting them to be able to analyze the interrelationships, processes, and properties of the different areas of design and specifically the influences and nature of collaboration in design, seemed to be helpful. This allowed more time for the students to form a deeper understanding of the terms and methods in collaborative design. The positive results were also apparent in the midterm exam that the students completed. |
Learning Outcomes | Student learning Outcomes (from DSGN 105 Course Outline) assessed: A. Compare the areas of Design, their interrelationships, and processes. B. Summarize the properties of Collaboration. |

Data Summary | The results of the finished assignments and the midterm exam showed over 80% clear understanding of the material covered that directly related to SLOs A & B in the DSGN 105 course outlines. |
Analysis Summary | The students were able to successfully achieve the learning outcomes that were addressed, since a significant majority of the students' answers on both the assignments and midterm questions were correctly completed. |
Next Steps Planned | Since the results for the A & B SLOs that were assessed, seemed to be successful, a similar approach will be taken for presenting the information required for SLO C - 'Evaluate various collaborative processes' - from the DSGN 105 course outline, and in addition, including methods that would require students to have more direct engagement and practice with the various collaborative processes. |

Changes
Details | Certain changes have been made to the assignments and the syllabus and course outline for Spring 2013. I was able to assess that the students required more direct examples of historically prominent art and design collaboration groups earlier in the semester, and more in depth discussions in class, before they could develop a concrete understanding of SLO A & B. It seemed logical to make changes to the DSGN 105 syllabus and due date requirements, to provide the students with at least one more week of in class lectures and discussions, before expecting them to be able to analyze the interrelationships, processes, and properties of the different areas of design and specifically the influences and nature of collaboration in design. More information was given to the students in the form of lectures and showing more examples earlier on in the semester, prior to giving out assignments that relate directly to SLO A & B, helping expand the students’ knowledge in these areas more precisely. |

More Details | As well as a revision of outcomes and assessment methods done for SLO A & B, I will analyze and discuss the data and next step with other faculty in the related fields, as well as with the department chair. The data of outcomes will be measured, and an implementation method or plan for certain changes to be made will be written up and discussed again with appropriate colleagues, in order to be implemented during Spring 2014. I will also use similar methods with SLO C from the DSGN 105 course outline, and in addition, include methods that would require students to have more direct engagement and practice with the various collaborative processes. |
