Assessment

Assessment Methods

Pre & post surveys or tests

Assessment DescriptionIn a prior semester AAPS 104 sections were assessed to get a baseline of student learning. Course improvements were made in Spring 2013. Assessment was done in the same semester to see if the improvements yielded increased learning in the students.
Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this course a student will be able to select appropriate academic policies (e.g. academic renewal) to improve their grade point average and regain good academic standing.
Number of SectionsThree sections were involved in the main assessment. These sections involved instructors who participated in assessment in both the Spring 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. The results of the main assessment will be used to determine if the course improvements, made in Spring 2013, improved student learning.
Number of InstructorsThree instructors were involved in the main assessment. Additional instructors participated in the assessment but did not do so for both Spring 2012 and Spring 2013. These instructors received their results for the purpose of individual feedback only. Their results were not included in the main assessment.
Number of StudentsSixty-four students completed both the pre and post test, and were part of the main assessment, during the Spring 2013 semester.

Changes

DetailsBeginning Spring 2013 instructors were asked to add teaching strategies that would encourage student engagement and critical thinking in addition to adding one direct teaching strategy such as reviewing the material and breaking up large lectures into mini-lectures.
Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this course a student will be able to select appropriate academic policies (e.g. academic renewal) to improve their grade point average and regain good academic standing.

More DetailsWe plan to pilot questions for an assessment tool focusing on the SLO “Upon completion of this course a student will be able to compare and contrast a variety of educational goals with respect to their requirements and time to completion” during the Fall 2013 semester. In addition, we plan to analyze and discuss the results that we received this semester regarding our new teaching methods.
