BIO 100B - Intro to Biology - Stage 5 - Bibit Traut

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Classroom response systems (such as iClickers or computers)
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment Description-analysis of in-class exams and on-line quizzes and homework that assessed understanding and misconceptions of SLO for follow-up by instructor

-observation of laboratory activities

-in-class iclicker quizzes that provided immediate assessment of student's understanding of lecture concepts and immediate follow-up instruction by instructor

-lab reports and capstone projects with rubric evaluation

-pre/post survey of "Understanding Evolution" at beginning and end of course

Data Analysis

Data Shared With
  • Instructors of the same course (at CCSF)
  • Faculty and staff within our department
  • Faculty and staff from other colleges
Data Sharing Methods

Face-to-face meetings

Data Summary-96% of the students received greater than 70% on the cummulative final

-immediate feedback from iclickers on in-class questions and follow-up questions to analytical homework assignments led to increased understanding of concepts and decreased misconceptions

-100% of students achieved 75% or higher on lab reports that were scaffolded by a rubric
Analysis SummaryGrades higher than 70% are proficient
Next Steps Planned-continue to update course materials to reflect advances in the field and engage students and address their interests.

-continue to incorporate more student-driven inquiry

-I also administered the pre/post test "Understanding Evolution" and initial understanding was 67% and improved to 74% by the end of the semester. I will re-use this test and incorporate more specific examples through out the semester to evaluate understanding that factors out the context-specific examples of this survey
Learning OutcomesNo answer

Changes

Details-made course SLOs explicit

-incorporated clear grading rubric for laboratory activities and capstone projects

-increased student led discussions

-incorporated inquiry-based laboratory activites for each lab

-incorporated quantitative skills activities

-pre/post survey of "Understanding Evolution"

GE Area C Details

Learning OutcomesA. Construct the framework of biology using evolution as a unifying concept.

B. Synthesize evidence supporting evolution as the mechanism for the diversity of life and distinguish diverse forms of life.

C. Compare and contrast from and function for the major plant phyla and correlate this to the evolution and use of land plants.

D. Evaluate the interactions between organisms and their environment through ecological principles.

E. Assemble observations to generate hypotheses, design and develop experiments, analyze and evaluate date, recommend new questions and support or refute other studies.

-meeting rubric proficiency
Extra DetailsI also administered the pre/post test "Understanding Evolution" and initial understanding was 67% and improved to 74% by the end of the semester. I will re-use this test and incorporate more specific examples through out the semester to evaluate understanding along by factoring out the context-specific examples of this survey

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsI will incorporate some context specific example of the pre/post survey so that the understanding of concepts are being evaluated and not simply the content. I will identify specific questions on each exam to follow progress of student achievement of SLOs throughout the semester (this is in addition to the cummulative final exam that I give that already addresses this).
