P SC 11L - Conceptual Physical Science Lab - Stage 5 - Christopher Lewis
Assessment
Assessment Methods | - Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
- Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
- Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
|
---|
Assessment Description | Weekly lab reports, a portfolio, and two exams were given. Questions required students to make measurements and develop mathematical and graphical models to explain phenomenon, and make and test predictions. |

Data Analysis
Data Shared With | - Instructors of the same course (at CCSF)
- Faculty and staff within our department
|
---|
Data Sharing Methods | Face-to-face meetings |
---|
Data Summary | The majority of students were able to demonstrate proficiency across all outcomes with the exception of D. set up algebraic equations to modcl principles. Only about half are consistently able to demonstrate this outcome. |
---|
Analysis Summary | Students demonstrate proficiency if they can achieve 70% of the points possible for a particular SLO. |
---|
Next Steps Planned | Continue to increase the use of algebraic models and include a more diverse offering of methodologies for teaching it, including manipulatives (physical models of equations). |

Tentative Future Plans
Term | Fall 2013 |
---|
Activities | - Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
- Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
- Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
|
---|
More Details | We will review this semesters data, with a focus on the GE content area C outcome relating to using models. We will plan any necessary changes in addition to those already described above with respect to course SLO D. Both this course SLO and the GE Outcome being considered across the college are closely related, which will simplify the changes needed. |
