CHEM 101B - General College Chemistry - Stage 5 - Lawrence Fong, Robert Price
Assessment
Assessment Methods | Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs |
---|---|
Assessment Description | Two final exam questions associated with two learning outcomes were assessed for student success. |
Learning Outcomes | A. Deduce rate laws from experimental data, and calculate rate constant and activation energies from appropriate data. Utilize the above concepts to explain chemical reaction mechanisms. F. Define and understand entropy, enthalpy and free energy, and their relation to the spontaneity of chemical reactions and physical processes. |

Data Summary | The average result for students answering the question related to Learning Outcome A was 72%. The average result for students answering the question related to Learning Outcome F was 71%. |
Analysis Summary | An average score of 65% on each question is considered successful completion of the learning outcome. Both outcomes are therefore successful. |

Changes
Details | We revised homework problems to improve student learning related reaction rates and mechanism. We emphasized more how to use diverse and interrelated data to solve complex problems. We assessed a different SLO on entropy and related thermodynamic topics. |

Learning Outcomes | Outcomes A and F (see above). |
Tentative Future Plans
Term | Fall 2013 |

Activities |
|
More Details | We plan to assess a different learning outcome during the Fall 2013 semester--Learning Outcome C: Manipulate and evaluate equilibria of acid-base, complex ion and solubility systems, using standard algebraic and physical arguments. In addition, the student will measure equilibrium concentrations in the laboratory and deduce the corresponding equilibrium constant. We will use one or more common final exam questions for the assessment. |
