PHYS 1 - Introduction to Human Physiology - Stage 5 - Susan F. Akana

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Classroom response systems (such as iClickers or computers)
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment Description1. New to S2013: All quizzes were conducted on Insight. This enabled "scrambled" questions to be administered to each student. Moreover, for the end-of-term review, a pool of "scrambled" questions were loaded for repeated pratice.

2. New to S2013: Technical lab reports & lecture papers were reviewed and returned with comments and a rubric sheet on Insight.

3. New to S2013: reflective journals

4. New to S2013: iClickers were introduced for end-of-term review. After a total of 3 hours; 75% of respondent would recommend it's use for future classes.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With
  • Instructors of the same course (at CCSF)
  • Faculty and staff within our department
  • Faculty and staff from other colleges
  • CCB FEST
Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Shared document files
Data SummaryThe majority of the students were able to supply at least a partial answer to each question on the problem set.
Analysis SummaryStudents who turned in a rough draft on their first lecture paper scored a higher final grade on the assignment (average 87% versus 72%).

New exercises designed to familiarize the students with the data acquisition system (BioPac self check), EMG preTEST, EKG preTEST, resulted in an increase in the final average scores on their technical laboratory reports compared to the performance of the previous class (84% versus 78%).
Next Steps PlannedI wrote a exercise sheet that was designed to be filled by a study group. Next semester, the assignment will first be required of each individual. Then, the study group must submit a concensus answer sheet. The goal is to encourage more discussion, reflection and to explicitly practice team-learning skills.

Changes

DetailsAdded preTEST before technical labs, BioPac self-check, Blue Book reflections, new lab modules (osmosis, scientific method and polar/nonpolar molecules, memory and learning) and introduced iClickers in the 18th week of class for course review.

Learning OutcomesThe 4 problem sets were one the best arenas for providing the students structured questions where they had to describe and link facts to demonstrate understanding of a physiological model such as diabetes mellitus or infertility.

The fourth problem set explicitly ask the student to apply physiological concepts to explain the outcome of a model in a "space alien" that possessed TWO livers. Students were asked to delineate the outcome of 10 physiological systems based on the hypothetical model.
Number Students: Proficient15
Number Students: Developing5
Number Students: No Evidence1
CriteriaOf 4 problem sets, the lowest score was dropped, the three remaining scores summed and a percentage was calculated for correct answers. The lower limit for proficiency, developing and no evidence were 90, 80 and 70%.
Extra DetailsA hurdle in the course is the ability to learn to interpret and manipulate data with the software tools in the BioPac data acquisition system.

Next semester, students will be required to demonstrate competency skills (supposedly learned in the assigned tutorial) in a new exercise sheet before they will be allowed to advance to collecting real data.

Tentative Future Plans
