Improvement Details

DetailsWe upgraded to the Word 2013 and used a new edition of the textbook (same author) as well as SNAP 2013, a moodle-based learning management system complete with textbook's assessments and auto-graded assignments. Textbook enhanced with more projects and assessments over last version.

Students able to practice more with auto-graded assessments; weekly uploaded assessments are instructor-graded.

Modified and added a few more activities to meet student learning outcomes being assessed.

Rewrote the current course outline of records (both face-to-face and online versions) BUT was unable to meet the deadline for final submission and approval by the Curriculum Committeel during the Spring 2014 semester. It will be submitted when the Curriculum Committee reconvenes in the Fall.

Assessment Methods

Methods* Auto-graded concept and skill exams at the end of every chapter.

* Performance evaluations at the end of most chapters. (Based on last semester's review, limited these to only the beginning level chapters.) These are auto-scored.

* Weekly uploaded assignment/assessment graded by the instructor.

*Midterm and final exams concept and skill exams covering only the chapters covered during that period. A face-to-face production test was scheduled as part of both the midterm and final tests, graded by the instructor.

How and With WhomNo answer
Number Assessed17
Data Summary17 students began the class. Five of the 17 dropped the class after the first two weeks.

12 students continued without officially dropping the course:

Four of the 12 did not meet the outcomes (33%)

Eight of the 12 met the outcomes (67%)

While almost 70% of the students met the outcomes and demonstrated a good knowledge of using Word's word processing capabilities, basic office skills such as proofreading and proper formatting were lacking. These are skills needed to be proficient and efficient in the office.
Planned ImprovementsInstructor may need to consider covering less content on Word functions and place more emphasis on basic office skills such as document formatting and proofreading.
