Improvement Details

DetailsI modified the course material to focus on two free web applications available through Google Drive. One app allows the user to edit digital photos and create basic graphic design elements. The second app provides web-based document templates for resume, cover letter, brochure, flyer and calendar.

Assessment Methods

MethodsI used animated demonstration / review at the beginning of each class to refresh students' understanding of the material. During the review, students were asked questions at every step and required to guide me in my execution of a task.

This is a highly effective, collaborative approach to engaging students in the multi-step problem solving process which underpins their ability to use the tools and menus within the application. I also employed in-class assignments that were project based to determine how well students could create and edit within the software. I found that on-going direct observations was the best way to determine the students' proficiency in the software environment.

How and With WhomI discussed my approach, planning and outcomes with Julian Skolnick, a colleague.
Number Assessed6
Data SummaryReview with questions: 100% participation

In-class assignments: 80%

Direct observation: 80%

I wanted 75% of the students to demonstrate competency with regards to the four major learning outcomes identified in the official course outline. This goal was met.
Planned ImprovementsI would like to implement more exercises that require that the students identify locations and functions on a diagram of the software workspace. I also want them to draw a diagram of the workspace from scratch.

I want to begin the next class with examples of finished work from the Spring 2014 class, so that students can see other student work and set goals from the very first class.

ActivitiesRevision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
DetailsI am working on creating a numerical scale that will correlate to my subjective assessments of a student's progress based on direct interaction and observation. I see so much development and progress along this front and want to have a better way to convert this information into data that is easier to analyze.
HighlightsSoftware Update has been a fun and effective way to get students familiarized with cloud computing. It's rewarding to see them move from concept to implementation in 15 short hours.
