Improvement Details

DetailsBased on student feedback on past BSEN 70 Student Self-Assessment/Satisfaction surveys, several assignments and online activities were modified this spring in the online section of the course.

Assessment Methods

MethodsThe BSEN 70 student survey was administered during the week of May 12, 2014. In addition, overall class completion data were reviewed and compared to the student responses in the self-assessment survey.

Assessment Data Discussion and Analysis

TermSpring 2014
How and With WhomThe four BSEN 70 and BSEN 74 instructors met three times during the Spring 2014 semester to discuss the Fall 2013 survey results and to discuss new writing and editing assignments for the BSEN classes.
Number Assessed19
Data Summary95% of the students in the BSEN 70 class demonstrated proficiency on exams and homework assignments with a score of 70 percent or higher. This percentage is significantly higher than the percentage of students demonstrating proficiency in Fall 2013--an increase that may have occurred partly because the majority of students who were doing poorly in the online class dropped it by the last day to withdraw.

100% of the BSEN 70 students who completed the survey agreed with one or more of these statements:

• I have improved in my ability to analyze sentences and apply the principles of correct sentence structure.

• I have improved in my ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect punctuation and to punctuate sentences correctly.

• I have improved in my ability to apply rules for proper capitalization, number usage, and abbreviation usage.

• I have improved in my ability to compose clear, concise, correct sentences in well-organized paragraphs and compositions.

• I have improved in my ability to proofread and edit written material to correct errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

• I have learned skills that will help me in my other courses and at my job (or at future jobs).

100% of the BSEN 70 students who completed the survey in Spring 2014 agreed that they benefited from taking the class.
Planned ImprovementsIn Fall 2014 the two BSEN 70 instructors will again assign the same writing assignment in both class sections to compare the consistency of instructor grading using the BSEN rubric criteria and to determine the level of outcome mastery students demonstrate in each class.

In addition, the instructors will review the data obtained from the past four semesters of assessments when we refine the MLOs as part of the revision process of the BSEN 70 course outline in Fall 2014.

ActivitiesRevision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements), Assessment (measurement) of outcomes, Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
DetailsTwo sections of BSEN 70 will be offered in the fall, and the instructors will continue to gather data on the percentage of students demonstrating success in achieving the learning outcomes. A 70 percent or higher average assignment score will indicate outcome achievement.

The BSEN 70 Student Self-Assessment/Satisfaction survey will be administered in December 2014. Additionally, the BSEN 70 course outline will be revised at the beginning of the Fall 2014 semester.
