Improvement Details

DetailsImprovements implemented during Spring 2014:

Instructors supplemented classroom instruction by inviting CCSF counselors to speak to students on identifying job-related skills and tips on improving their resumes; also invited representatives from the State Employment Development Department (EDD) as guest speakers to share job search resources.

Another innovative approach was to require that students attend a minimum of three training workshops at Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) and report back to the class. They had to submit all materials obtained from the JVS training, along with a report of what they learned on a live web form created by the instructor.

Conducive to student learning was the requirement to mimic the classroom laboratory as a legitimate work environment. Students were expected to arrive promptly to class and “dress for success” during mock interviews. Sometimes, CCSF counselors assisted in conducting these mock interviews.

In addition, students had to produce one error-free cover letter and either one Chronological or Functional resume targeted for an actual administrative job position researched online.

Assessment Methods

MethodsThe major assessment method used was a review of student portfolios to determine that each of the following was done:

-Completion of written chronological or functional resume

-Completion of report for off-site job workshops (if applicable)

-Finished cover letter for actual administrative job posting

-Direct observation of mock interview(s)

-Completion of follow up or thank you letter

-Class attendance and participation

Data SummaryApproximately 90% of students passed the class with either an A, B or C grade. Most of these students needed the course as a requirement for a business certificate. Our goal was to have 70% of our students meet the outcomes so based on these results, we feel we are doing fine in all areas.
