Satisfaction surveys

Assessment DescriptionIn December 2012, our faculty and staff created an online student satisfaction survey for the Downtown Center/Campus for SLO reporting purposes. Faculty, staff and student leaders actively encouraged students to complete this ten question survey during the Spring 2013 semester by means of weekly reminders during class, discussions related to accreditation, email notices, and distributing and posting flyers throughout the building. The questions included: 1) What types of classes are you taking this semester?; 2) Would you recommend the Downtown Campus to a friend or relative?; 3) Based on your educational goals, do you think you are enrolled in the right class?; 4) Do you have an Education Plan or know what the next class you need to take?; 5) Do you feel comfortable and accepted at the Downtown Campus?; 6) Is it easy to get help and information at the Downtown Campus?; 7) Is registering for classes at the Downtown Campus easy?; 8) Are counselors at the Downtown Campus helpful?; 9) How satisfied are you with the Student Services Office?; and 10) Do you feel the faculty and staff members are friendly and work well with each other? Moreover, students were invited to share comments at the end of the survey. This survey link can be found at http://www.ccsf.edu/NEW/en/our-campuses/downtown/noncredit/studentsurvey.html

2. Students will have access to quality programs, classes, and services supporting and enhancing their educational success.

3. The Downtown Center programs and services will promote student educational progress.

Data SummaryOverwhelmingly, our students are very satisfied with their experiences at the Downtown Center. For instance, 99% of our students would recommend the Downtown Center to a friend or relative and the majority noted that they feel very comfortable and accepted here. There is clear indication that virtually every student at the Downtown Center believe it is easy to get help and information, and that they find it easy to register for classes. A majority of the students who responded in this survey did meet with a counselor and reported that the counselors were very helpful and they were satisfied with their interaction. Likewise, the students feel very satisfied when they sought out the Student Services Office. Additionally, the predominant opinion is that students feel the faculty and staff members are friendly and work well with each other.

Most of our students reported taking ESL-only classes and noncredit classes. A small percentage take credit-only classes and a smaller percentage take both credit and noncredit classes. Based on the students’ responses, almost everyone believe they are enrolled in the right class and know which class to take next to pursue their education plan and/or goal.

Here are a few comments that students shared to indicate their satisfaction:

- Great campus. Well trained teachers. Excellent classes!

- I’m back to school after a very long break and I really like the instructors and staff. They are super-friendly and helpful. Thank you so much for all that hard work that you do.

- I recommend the Downtown Campus for any new foreigner who would want to learn English. The teachers are great and very devoted for their students.

- Downtown Campus of CCSF is a great campus for me to improve my English. I like to study here.

- I LIKE THIS CAMPUS. It’s easy to get help and information.
Data AnalysisThe Spring 2013 satisfaction survey results indicate that the Downtown Center provides a comfortable, friendly and helpful environment for our students. They enjoy taking classes here and feel that they are getting quality education from our caring and outstanding faculty. Also, they recognized how easy it is to get help and information at the Downtown Campus and believe they are enrolled in the right class. On this note, it appears that we have created a conducive environment to support student learning and success (outcome #1)). Although the survey did not specifically ask whether the environment is safe and clean, it is important to note that we are mindful to maintain a safe and clean environment here.

As for outcome #2, the survey results clearly indicate that the majority of our students had an easy time registering for classes, enrolled in the right classes and knew which class to take next as well as feeling satisfied with our Student Services Office. This is confirmation that we are providing students with access to quality programs, classes and services supporting and enhancing their educational success.

Given the consistently positive feedback about our programs and services, I believe we are meeting outcome #3 because the good work we do on a daily basis is indeed promoting student educational progress. Not only do we want our students to start a program and/or utilize our services, we also care deeply about their retention and persistence in their course of study because we very much want to see their reach their educational goal.

With regard to outcome #4, a majority of the students recognize that the staff and faculty here are working cooperatively with one another. Indeed, the positive working relationships here are evident for they have been strengthened over the years.
Next Steps Planned

It is very affirming that virtually every one of the students surveyed are very satisfied with their experiences here at the Downtown Center. However, we must not rest on our laurels. We plan to take the following course of action Fall 2013 semester - 1. Engage in more dialogues with our staff and faculty about how to continue to best serve our students. Specifically, focus on student access, student learning, student success, persistence, and retention. 2. Revise and modify the Spring 2013 survey to assess how students feel about their safety on campus and get their perceptions on cleanliness (as it relates to outcome #1). 3. Conduct another student satisfaction survey as a means to gather more feedback. 4. Share and discuss the student comments with our staff and faculty, especially those who were mentioned in the comments. 5. Summarize the Spring 2013 survey results on a PDF and post it on our Downtown Center homepage as well as throughout the building for information sharing purposes.

Learning Outcomes

All four outcomes will be supported by the previous response.
