Data SummaryTracking data from SFSU listing GPA and probation stats for Com studies transfers as well as tracking data from speech and debate competitors.
Data AnalysisWe noted that our students transfer mostly to SFSU and graduate with higher GPAs than native students and other Com Studies CC transfer. Additionally, students that participated heavily in our capstone experience (Speech and Debate Competition for at least two tournaments) transferred 83% of the time. The data also revealed that competing students transferred to highly regarded institutions such as UCLA, Columbia, U of Mass, & Berkeley.
Next Steps Planned

We deleted SPCH 37 as an option for students in the Major so as to funnel students into the high impact experience of tournament travel.

ILO Alignment and Assessment Plans

I.A. Use reason and creativity...Exhibit advanced critical thinking skills to structure logical, credible, and well researched arguments that re-enforce or effectuate change in people’s attitudes, beliefs, relationships, and social and political policies.
I.B. Apply diverse viewpoints...Articulate an understanding of the way humans manage and process

symbolic behavior and how communication practices shape our realities

and change across context. In so doing, the student will understand and apply theoretical concepts of the communication discipline.

Identify and use communication practices that are culturally dependent and demonstrate how to effectively communicate with diverse cultural

understandings. Students will display intercultural literacy, sensitivity, and self-reflective strategies.
I.C. Locate, retrieve, and evaluate information...Manage speaking anxiety and furnish effective verbal presentations alongside presentational aids, demonstrating effective analysis of audience,

environment, message-making (both verbal and non-verbal), organizational principles, and delivery skills.
