Learning Outcomes | In the preliminary trial of a rubric-based writing assessment Program Level SLOS were address: PSLO 1: Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge of historical developments and trends, including the impact of class, gender, ethnicity, culture and politics related to the courses taken. PSLO 2: Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize historical evidence and interpretations and to use methods of inquiry and expression appropriate to the course. PSLO 3: Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary and secondary sources and to compose a written argument or interpretation which uses them, as appropriate, for support. PSLO 4: Explain the major social, cultural, political and economic developments in United States history, their causes and effects, and their historical significance. PSLO 5: Analyze changes in the political, social, cultural and economic organization in the western world and explain their historical significance. Data Analysis | Two history courses were used as a trial for an overall PSLO assessment assignment, History 9 (Immigrants in the United States) and History 4A (Early Western Civilization). In order to assess Program level SLOs a writing assignment based on primary sources and addressing an historic theme was assigned. The prompt varied according to the subject under study. The essay question for History 9: Using at least 6 primary sources from the reader for this class, describe the major push factors that led to emigration and the major pull factors that led to choosing the United States as a destination. The PSLOs addressed: PSLO 1: Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge of historical developments and trends, including the impact of class, gender, ethnicity, culture and politics related to the courses taken. PSLO 2: Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize historical evidence and interpretations and to use methods of inquiry and expression appropriate to the course. PSLO 3: Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary and secondary sources and to compose a written argument or interpretation which uses them, as appropriate, for support. PSLO 4: Explain the major social, cultural, political and economic developments in United States history, their causes and effects, and their historical significance. PSLO 5: Analyze changes in the political, social, cultural and economic organization in the western world and explain their historical significance. The prompts for History 4A: Essay Question: #1 Using at least six primary sources from the reader for this class, identify the key elements of effective governance. Essay Question #2 Using at least six primary sources from the reader for this class, discuss the church, or religion, as a political institution. The PSLOs addressed in History 4A: PSLO 2: Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize historical evidence and interpretations and to use methods of inquiry and expression appropriate to the course. PSLO 3: Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary and secondary sources and to compose a written argument or interpretation which uses them, as appropriate, for support. PSLO 5: Analyze changes in the political, social, cultural and economic organization in the western world and explain their historical significance. PSLO 7: Exhibit an understanding of the art, literature, and major cultural traditions of people through the ages, as appropriate. The 7 Rubric categories - scored on a scale of 1 to 6: 1. Student responds in a organized and coherent way. (Communication) 2. Student uses effective grammar, syntax, and spelling. (Communication) 3. Student correctly identifies the problem implicit in the prompt and chooses appropriate sources to solve the problem. (Critical Thinking) 4. Next Steps Planned | In Fall 2013 Historians will meet to evaluate the results of the trial assessment of the PSLOs for the History Discipline. The rubric will be discussed and edited to better fit a wide variety of courses. We will expand the assessment of a writing assignment to all courses in the History Discipline. |
