Assessment DescriptionOutcomes for Spring were derivative from our work with the American Library Association -- Allied Professional Association. 12 Students completed our program and were eligible for certification through the Library Support Staff Certification program (LSSC). These 12 expressed interest in the LSSC, and were directed to enrolling in the program in Chicago, and in this case were eligible for partial funding from and ALA grant for this purpose. Their eligibility for the LSSC meant that they met competencies in the areas of library foundations, reference, communications, technology and cataloging. Students who complete the five core courses in our program (and electives) are eligible. Competencies were prepared with ALA-APA. For program outcome, in this case, completion and correspondence with ALA-APA is deemed a positive outcome for the academic year. Please note, there is no distinction drawn here between those who completed a Certificate of Accomplishment and those who completed the academic major.

Data Summary100% of students completing certificates or AS degrees, who expressed an interest in obtaining the LSSC, qualified to do so, and were eligible for a grant to help support them in this process. The LSSC competencies, as have been discussed in previous reporting, match desired outcomes in the areas of library foundations, technology, communications, reference service and cataloging. They match well with outcomes measures for out courses, and they in turn inform us on areas of desired competency.

Next Steps Planned

It is too soon to alter the program. The only change to program is in future review of area employers and the desirability of providing alternate means to the development of current and prospective employees.

Assessment Activities

Assessment (measurement) of outcomes

Assessment DetailsWe will mainly monitor our relations with ALA APA. We will also be measuring the number of libraries in our region which participate in civil service and/or require library study as sufficient for advancement. We will be estimating program costs against public value, and considering alternative means to provide area employers with schooled employees.

Additional Highlights

An interesting process, whereby our mapping of competencies for the ALA-APA LSSC integrate with the PSLOs for the department and the ILOs for the college. There is still much work to be done, many more avenues to trace, but eventually every child will be entitled to suited outcomes from birth.
