Assessment DescriptionStudents enrolled in the Medical Office Assisting Program complete an eight-week professional practice course during the summer. The students complete a 35 hour skills lab which includes clinical and administrative practice. They are assigned to various health care facilities to complete 196 hours of work experience, Monday through Thursday, then meet with the instructor on Friday for conference.

The practice sites evaluate the student's clinical and administrative competencies, professional and ethical behavior, and their HIPAA compliance skills.

The students evaluate the clinical site training processes, and complete a self-evaluation on their performance. They also complete a program evaluation which focuses on their preparation for the professional practice placement.

Student complete a final examination based on their clinical site, which includes questions regarding policy and procedure manuals, to handling incident reports.

Data SummaryAll 22 students received a score of 3 (Satisfactory) to 5 (Excellent) on their evaluation forms. All students felt prepared for the professional practice, however some weak areas were identified in the clinical area.

All students performed within 70% on the CMA preparation practice tests.
Data AnalysisAs stated above, all 22 students performed within a 3-5 scoring level, with 3 being satisfactory and 5 being excellent, with the above score being a 4 (very good).
Next Steps Planned

The faculty will be meeting to review and discuss the student outcomes to develop a plan for next year. Areas to strengthen include more training in Excel and wound care.

We included employer events for the summer conference days. Three employers gave presentations to the class on the MA job description and hiring processes.

Assessment DetailsEach year, the assessment tools are revised. Outcomes are reviewed each year, with a follow-up after graduation. Weak areas are identified and strengthen for the next class, then re-evaluated.
