Assessment Description | Student completing the HIT Coding Specialist certificate are in their third semester. They must complete all classes with a C or higher. They continue to work in groups completing projects based on the HIM profession. The third semester include diagnostic and procedural coding practice and using an electronic encode for coding case studies. |
Learning Outcomes | • Assign diagnosis/procedures using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) official coding guidelines for inpatient and outpatient records • Assign procedure and service codes using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) • Use and maintain electronic applications and work processes to support clinical classifications and coding • Demonstrate professional and behavior skills and adhere to the necessary ethical standards of coding for HIM employment as a health information coder • Apply for Certified Coding Associate (CCA) examination offered through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) |
