Certificate of Achievement (credit: usually 18 or more units) Retail Management
Stage 1

Tentative Future Assessment Plans

Assessment TermFall 2013
Assessment Activities

Attend WAFC meetings to brainstorm recruitment methods with local employers.

Assessment DetailsThe Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC) sponsors the Retail Management Program at CCs in multiple states.

We do not know of any students in the Retail Management program as CCSF does not have any way of asking students to declare their intentions. I get maybe one call a month from a potential student. Last year a student I didn't even know came to me asking to sign off on his certificate. Yay! Except he didn't work for the WAFC.

There may be a few, however, the sponsoring organizations (WAFC-member retailers such as Safeway) complain that enrollment from their employees is very low.

So, until I have a way of tracking enrollment, while the program is technically open and I do attend meetings and presentations on behalf of CCSF, there isn't much to track.

Additional Highlights

The good news is that this has forced us, and CCSF to address real limitations in our IT capabilities.

A student should be able to at least declare an intent for a specific major/certificate so they can hear from the appropriate program coordinator.

That said, the employers themselves also want to promote the program but it is difficult for them to convince employees to sign up. This is a program-wide issue - no college is successful and so there aren't any best practices to leverage.

I continue to promote it, make sure brochures are at all local member retailers, keep brochures at Financial Aid and Student Counseling, make sure students at the beginning of the semester in all related classes know about it...

Theoretically there is no cost to maintaining the program. Eliminating it would eliminate a good excuse to call and connect with local retailers, so I would recommend keeping it just for that purpose.
