Student satisfaction surveys

Assessment DescriptionBroadcast Electronic Media Arts used Survey Monkey to assess all BEMA students vie email. 70 students completed the survey.

They were asked which certificates they have already earned and which they plan to earn. BEMA offers 14 certificates in Audio recording and production, Video production and editing, radio production, digital media skills and rich media. These questions were helpful in determining how familiar the students were with the department.

Next the students were asked if they were aware of one specific PLO: Students will be able to display professionalism and understanding of workforce protocol in communications and behavior. They were then asked if they BEMA introduced the idea in our classes. Students were next asked if their classes “added together” taught a developing idea or mastery of the concept of professionalism and workforce protocol.

Finally, students were asked for any additional comments.

Additional Highlights

Highlights:

Overall our students were very positive towards the assessed PLO. Although only 66% of the respondents knew of the outcome (professionalism and workforce protocol) they stated that, “It was not explained out right but was woven into the Internship class and to some extent in 145 and 110.” Other students commented that, “this is emphasized in all my BEMA classes” and, “The class taught us how to work together.”

In terms of introducing the concept of the outcome, 91% of the respondents felt that the PLO was at least introduced. And when asked if their BEMA classes ADDED TOGETHER taught a developing idea and or mastery of the concept 94% said yes.

Students had many additional comments regarding the specific learning outcome:

One student requested more collaboration between departments: “Given the new landscape of broadcast, journalism, entertainment, film that CCSF really needs to integrate multiple programs together with the concept that students are required to take classes in the other depts but that class projects can cross over for credit between the departments especially when the projects utilize journalism, broadcast, audio/sound, film. I'd also suggest that CCSF BEMA work with the SF Industry and bring together Panel Discussions with each of the displines and develop Internship programs with the industry. Like an apprentice program. students get great hands on and industry gets smart, free labor who's eager to learn. just saying...”

Others were more generally supportive of BEMA and what they gained here:

“The BEMA program has been a fantastic program that has helped me change careers. It provides real world skills, a great support group and lots of opportunities to grow outside of class.”

“The BCST department has done an excellent job. They out Rank State By Far!!! I use Terms and Have learned things that people I know That Have A Master's In Broadcast Don't know.”

“CCSF's BEMA department is wonderful and does an excellent job.”

“The broadcast department has great teachers and classes”

“Keep up the good work BEMA.”

One final student summed up the professionalism of BEMA students thusly:

“I am a working audio professional and have my own company KJPaul.com. I have hired CCSF audio students on occasion and have been very happy with their skills and the seriousness at which they take the job. I run over 5 shows a week and have worked in most of the large hotels in San Francisco.”

One student suggested putting the PLO’s on the course syllabus which could be a topic of discussion at Flex.
