Instructor Liaison
Stage 5

Assessment Activities

Assessment Methods
  • Quizzes/exams/content-related surveys
  • Pre & post exams or surveys
  • Direct observation of students
  • Satisfaction surveys
  • Feedback from collaboration with other departments (such as instructional programs)
Assessment DescriptionOn 2/5/13 I met with the English 91 class. The intent of the visit was to introduce myself, describe the counseling services our department offers, and announce the upcoming Graduation Requirements Workshop on 2/14. I explained the content of the workshop and described how it would help them plan their courses more successfully thus saving time and money. I passed out a sign-up sheet for the workshop and 17 of the students indicated their intent to attend.

17 students initially signed up to attend the workshop out of which 11 attended.

This was a very active, motivated group of students who remained engaged and did not hesitate to ask questions. Since my discussion with Ms. Denny regarding learning styles (as noted above) I made a concerted effort to repeat critical material several times, often using the blackboard to illustrate complicated points. Students therefore could use visual as well as aural learning styles.
Learning OutcomesBy participating in the workshop on CCSF graduation requirements for students enrolled in a designated section of English 91, students will demonstrate an increase in knowledge about CCSF requirements for graduation, including majors, GPA, academic renewal, catalog rights, general education, units, and transfer and will apply the knowledge to the creation of an educational plan.

By participating in the workshop on transfer requirements for students enrolled in a designated section of English 91, students will demonstrate an increase in knowledge about CSU and UC transfer requirements, including general education and core transfer major requirements, use of Internet resources such as Assist.org. Students will apply their knowledge to the creation of an educational plan.

Data SummaryThere was one additional question on the Post-Test which asked about student satisfaction with the information learned in the workshop. The correct number of answers increased in all of the questions except for number 10. It would be worth re-stating question #10 next semester more clearly.
Data AnalysisThe change in number of correct responses from the Pre to Post Test greatly increased this semester as compared to the workshop results from Fall 2013. I suspect that this increase was due in part to a more consistent attempt on the part of the presenter to repeat the material in several different ways throughout the workshop. In addition I think that it was beneficial to re-write a couple of the test questions that were given in the Fall so that they were less ambiguous.
Next Steps Planned
  • In Fall 2013 I will continue to conduct workshops in Graduation Requirements and Transfer; however
  • I will work with the same English instructor except that the English class will be one level higher - English 92/93. This might require more frequent counselor interaction with the class as there is no built-in lab time for the students to attend the workshops and/or meet with the counselor for individual academic planning. Based on my experience with the English 91 class I will use the same methodology as I have used in the past which included frequent repetition of material, student inquiry, and presentations utilizing more than one learning modality.

Tentative Future Assessment Plans

Assessment TermSpring 2014
Assessment Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
Assessment DetailsI will continue to have informal dialogue with the instructor of the English 92/93 course. I anticipate making additional classroom visits prior to the workshops so as to assess students' ability to attend workshops and individual counseling sessions outside of class time since 92/93 does not include a structured lab time.

Additional Highlights

Through the work that I have done with the English 91 students during this last academic year I have increased my understanding of the instructional modality. The concept of students' having varied learning styles has become much more evident. As a consequence of SLOs I have a greater understanding and respect for how I integrate the counseling process into the instructional modality.
