Data SummaryOn 2/13/13, Bill discussed the next steps for the Enhanced Orientations SLO with the faculty of CSCD in the department meeting. A call for volunteers to plan and present the Enhanced Orientations yielded ten names from the department. Subsequent committee meetings were held on April 9, April 17 and May 14, to further refine topics and structure.

Further discussion & planning will take place during fall 2013 semester. Implementation is targetd for early spring term, 2014. Jack will assist Bill in updating the trainer manual ; Cynthia will assist planning, bringing her expertise from conducting International Student orientations in the past (that model Enhanced Orientation approach). Both of these planning activities will occur during the fall 2013 term. Financial Aid counselors will be included (since this was a major recommendation from the 2010 Enhanced Orientations series); other possible participants to be determined.

We will build on the experience of the 2010 pilot as well as the experience of the International Student orientations as we construct this newest version of the "Enhanced Orientations."

Staff development on "How to Conduct Group Counseling" will be presented during the fall 2013 term. Faculty leaders for this to be determined.
Data AnalysisWe are still in the planning stage for the updated format of the 2010 pilot and do not have new data to analyze at this time.
Next Steps Planned

Rubrics will be developed and used to record counselor observations of student questions to assess effectiveness of the orientation format. Satisfaction surveys will be developed, administered and analyzed at future presenter debriefing sessions. Randomly selescted student participants will be invited to focus groups.

Learning Outcomes

1. By the end of the Enhanced Orientation, students will have increased knowledge of the educational planning process, utilization of placement test scores and of student support services. 2. By the end of the Enhanced Orientations, students will increase in feeling supported and cared about at CCSF. 3. Those students who participated in the Enhanced Orientations will have higher academic performance and persistence than those who attended the one hour or on-line orientations.

Tentative Future Assessment Plans

Assessment TermSpring 2014
Assessment Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
Assessment DetailsWe will explore the possibility of involving more counseling departments and programs in the Enhanced Orientations.

We will continue to explore best practices by researching how other community colleges deliver orientations.

We hope to pilot at least one modified (from the 2010 pilot) Enhanced Orientation in the spring 2014 term, collect data and analyze these data in order to institute changes as appropriate.
