Assessment Methods

Direct observation of students

Assessment DescriptionAs a result of debriefing sessions held in Fall for counselor presenters, two questions on the pre and posttests were reworded to ensure better clarity. The pre and post surveys were used to collect data on the effectiveness of the grad petition preparation workshops. Counselor presenters reported that students made individual appointments with them to follow-up and complete the grad petition.
Learning OutcomesBy the end of the Graduation Petition Workshop, students will become knowledgeable about basic requirements for the grad petitions, the information to bring to their appointments such as transcripts from other colleges, ideas about a major, unit requirements, and catalog year.

Data SummaryCounselors reported that workshop attendance increased from Fall to Spring for the grad petition workshops. Students were more prepared for the individual appointment than those who had not attended the workshop. They brought the appropriate documentation with them to the appointment, such as transcripts from courses completed at other colleges, and information about catalog rights. The number of accurate answers from pre and posttests increased compared to Fall.
Data AnalysisCounselors attributed the improvements to better advertisement of the workshops, and to revision of the wording of pre/posttests. Counselors reported that students were more engaged as evidenced by an increase in student questions. It was suggested that the grad petition workshop become a part of the educational planning and/or orientation for new students. The workshop will inform students about components to be aware of as they move through their education.
Next Steps Planned

A suggestion grew out of the discussion for an expanded effort among counselors to restore the process of counseling to our work with greater emphasis on helping students to explore educational and career goals and majors.

Learning Outcomes
