COMP 9949 - DreamWeaver I - Stage 3 - Marilyn McNeal

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
Assessment DescriptionI looked at student work during each class and assigned research projects. One project was to complete an internet search of several HTML page elements to see what properties the related tags could carry. Another project involved searching online for CSS border properties. I asked students to work together to complete in class assignments. For example, I showed them how to add an image to the webpage and then asked them to work in pairs to add a second and third image to the same page.

Data Sharing Methods

Face-to-face meetings

Data SummaryAt least 50% of the students had difficulty with file and folder management and had to be assisted one-on-one for at least two classes in a row. The majority of the students were are to successfully create page links and tables for structuring page layout.
Analysis SummaryThe completion of a two page website laid out with tables and including a banner, three images and navigation indicated outcome achievement.
Next Steps PlannedFor Fall 2013, I have created a new handout that explains file and folder management in more detail. I have also previewed several instructional videos that discuss this topic and I will choose two to show during class. This subject matter will be addressed in the first two classes.
Learning OutcomesOutcome b) Define and Manage Files and Folders

Changes

DetailsI introduced several new activities to improve student understanding of the subject matter. An example: I asked students to do a critique of their neighbor's webpage based on layout, color scheme, effectiveness of images and overall readability. I also discuss CSS in great detail showing students how to use it to control the document, images, text and links.
Learning OutcomesC. Insert & Format with Properties Inspector

D. Overview of Linking Methods

Activities

Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)

More DetailsI am developing revised rubrics for assessing successful outcomes. A sheet with these rubrics will be handed to each student at the beginning of the course and we will check off the completion of each outcome throughout the course.

Additional Highlights

The process of defining and redefining outcomes and methods to measure those outcomes has helped me improve the courses that I teach. I now have a clearer way to track student progress and the effectiveness of my teaching.
