Assessment

Assessment Methods

Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs

Assessment DescriptionI used the first 20 multiple-choice questions on my final exam to assess two SLO's (10 questions each). I also had students write term papers describing their use of coping strategies reflecting these same two SLO's.
Learning Outcomes1. Describe and contrast styles and choices in communication that influence interpersonal effectiveness and decrease conflict.

2. Summarize the influence of self-talk on stress and coping, and describe how a more adaptive inner-dialogue can be developed.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With
  • Faculty and staff within our department
  • Faculty and staff from across the college
Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Website review and commentary
Data Summary90% of students received scores of 8 out of 10 questions correct on both SLO's. Additionally, 84% of students received scores of 70 or higher out of 100 on their term papers addressing the same SLO's.
Analysis SummaryResults from the final exam suggest a large majority of students are able to understand and contrast both styles of communication and the role of self-talk processes as they relate to stress and coping. Greater than 80% of students also demonstrated a satisfactory level of ability to apply these same strategies in their personal lives as reflected in 84% of students receiving term paper scores of 70 or higher out of 100 possible points.
Next Steps PlannedI am satisfied that students are learning these two central SLO's from my course. I will expand assessment in the future to include students understanding of stress physiology reflected in the course outline of record.
