Assessment DescriptionIn History 9 students were assessed using a pre and post survey to see if their content knowledge improved. Students also completed a writing assignment that was evaluated using a writing rubric.
Learning OutcomesSLO A: Compare historical changes in the rates and patterns of immigration to the United States and demonstrate their relationship to major political and economic transformations in U.S. History.

PSLO 2: Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize historical evidence and interpretations and to use methods of inquiry and expression appropriate to the course.

PSLO 3: Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary and secondary sources and to compose a written argument or interpretation which uses them, as appropriate, for support.

PSLO 4: Explain the major social, cultural, political and economic developments in United States history, their causes and effects, and their historical significance.

PSLO 5: Analyze changes in the political, social, cultural and economic organization in the western world and explain their historical significance.

Analysis SummaryThe assessment of SLO A using an objective survey showed that students improved their responses significantly. The average number of correct responses was 89.4%.

The assessment of PSLOs #2,#3, #4, and #5 was also successful. The average score of 5.3 out of 6.0, well above the 75% score considered acceptable. However, Turabian formatting was minimally required. Next semester this standard will be raised.
Next Steps PlannedIn Fall 2013 students will be given a more detailed handout on how to format papers using Turabian standards common to the study of History. And, they will receive the assessment rubric in advance so that the assessment process is more transparent to the students.
