PHOT 81A - Intermediate Photo: B & W Film/Darkroom - Stage 4 - Steven Raskin

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment DescriptionAs these three Student Learning Outcomes are very direct extensions of Beginning Photography skills, it is not a surprise that most students in the class did quite well, scoring Above Average or Excellent. Metering methodology was the weakest skill, and this might be attributable to less discussion of metering technique before reaching PHOT 81A, particularly as it pertains to black and white film exposures.
Learning OutcomesA. Compare and contrast the available lens focal lengths, aperture settings, and camera shutter speeds as they relate to motion and depth of field.

B. Calculate camera exposures including equivalent exposures.

C. Compare different metering methods.

Additional Highlights

By exploring the three "image capture stage" SLOs during this assessment period, students with prior digital photography experience have learned how silver-based media (film) responds differently to light exposure than do digital sensors. As a result, better image capture has been achieved and a subsequent broadening of students' image production skills.
