Assessment Description | Students were divided into groups of 3; each student in turn was to be the photographer, the assistant, and the subject for this portrait assignment. The objective was to use the 4 characteristics/principles of lighting (color, direction, intensity, and quality) while creating their portraits. I constructed a rubric that included the 4 principles of lighting with the measurements: Unsatisfactory, Needs Improvement, Satisfactory, and Outstanding. I evaluated the portrait project accordingly. |
Learning Outcomes | Apply lighting principles to create portrait photograph. |

Data Summary | 84.50% of students were in the Satisfactory or Outstanding columns of rubric. 2.00% were Unsatisfactory and 13.50% were in the Needs Improvement column. |
Analysis Summary | The vast majority of students were able to achieve the desired outcome. |
Next Steps Planned | Of the 4 principles of lighting, the one that had the lowest Outstanding score (15%) was the principle of color. I believe that more discussion and examples of effective use of color in photography would help improve student understanding of that visual concept. |
Learning Outcomes | A. Describe a photograph in terms of the four characteristics of light. C. Examine the benefits and limitations of "magic light". F. Select proper tools to create desired lighting effects. K. Experiment with various lighting tools. |
