Assessment DescriptionCase studies were used in class. Students work in groups to discuss and assign codes to these case studies. Extra credit case studies were posted online to evaluate the effectiveness of the class group work.
Learning Outcomes3. Demonstrate the ability to assign ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM codes to diagnoses according to the coding guidelines.

Face-to-face meetings

Data SummaryStudents did somewhat better on the online case studies after participating in the groups and class discussion. However, it was found that more work was needed in this area.
Analysis SummaryThere was improvement in the accuracy of the code assignments, but students still struggled with code sequencing. More work is needed in this area.
Next Steps PlannedCase study group work needs to be introduced earlier in the course for it to be affective.

More DetailsSince we will be going to a new coding system starting in Fall 2013, case studies will be introduced to students earlier in the semester to see if the coding and sequencing improves.
