CDEV 61 - Infant/toddler growth and development - Stage 5 - Peijue Chen

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment Descriptionwe have achieved successfully by majority of the students these major learning outcomes:

1) Understanding the importance of attachment relationships is the foundation of all developments in the first three years of a young child’s life.

2) Differentiate changes in physical/sensory-motor, social-emotional, and cognitive/language development through each stage of the first three years.

3) Explain the impact of responsive adults on supporting optimal development of infants and toddlers.

We have achieved what we like to accomplish. However, we still are searching a better way to use the text-book (Diary of a baby by Daniel Stern, 1998) so the majority of the students would appreciate the richness of a young child’s developing mind and emotions. We still convince that this book is a great match for the course, but a bit hard for some students to read. We have been using various methods to study the book, analyzing key developmental concepts, group discussions, reading guides, video clips to support students’ learning and they do show a wide range in ability to learn and motivation to learn.
Learning OutcomesWe mainly addressed these three major learning outcomes:

1) Understanding the importance of attachment relationships is the foundation of all developments in the first three years of a young child’s life.

2) Differentiate changes in physical/sensory-motor, social-emotional, and cognitive/language development through each stage of the first three years.

3) Explain the impact of responsive adults on supporting optimal development of infants and toddlers.

Next Steps PlannedAgain, we would like to search a better way to use the text-book (Diary of a baby by Daniel Stern, 1998) so the majority of the students would appreciate the richness of a young child’s developing mind and emotions. We still convince that this book is a great match for the course, but a bit hard for some students to read. We have been using various methods to study the book, analyzing key developmental concepts, group discussions, reading guides, video clips to support students’ learning and they do show a wide range in ability to learn and motivation to learn. We will continue to do that.

We have learned that majority of the students are motivated to learn and show a wide range of abilities to learn. We also realize that focusing on a few important objectives (SLOs) and study them in depth would be very rewarding for our students.

In addition, slowing down the pace of lecturing and letting students reflect on their experiences is very important.

Assessment (measurement) of outcomes

More DetailsWe upgraded our SLOs assessment this semester (Spr 13) and have positive feedback from students. So we plan to continue to use the same Assessment form next semester to assess students' learning outcomes.

We will continue to discuss methods and share ideas with colleagues on improving our teaching quality through a lot of conversations, emails exchange, and study group focusing on particular topic.

Open conversations with students and let to know them and respect their learning styles and find ways to support their learning.

Additional Highlights

Being mindful of the relationships of teaching and learning. This two-way process is crucial for both effective teaching and learning. I learn to be there for the students instead of to show how knowledgeable I am.
