BOSS 5501 - Keyboarding: Skill Development - Stage 4 - Shirley Orille

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Classroom response systems (such as iClickers or computers)
  • Feedback from collaboration with other departments
Assessment DescriptionAssessment of student keyboarding technique was done by direct observation. Analysis of 1- and 3-minute timed writings was also done regularly to assess speed and accuracy rates.

Web-based and locally installed software programs, such as Gregg College Keyboarding & Document Processing, aided in assessing and improving students' performance since it includes Misstroke Analysis and Prescription--an individualized, diagnostic tool built into the software. All data of students' results are saved in portfolios and assessed for grading purposes.
Learning OutcomesA. Key a minimum of 25 words per minute with 90% accuracy in a 3-minute timing (for beginner)

B. Key a minimum of 7-10 words per minute more than student’s entry rate with 90% accuracy in 3- and 5-minute timings (for intermediate)

C. Demonstrate the ability to key using proper finger and hand placement during observation

D. Demonstrate proper posture with “eyes on the copy”

E. Demonstrate proper control of the Shift, Tab, Enter, and Spacebar

F. Key the number and symbol keys with proper finger and hand placement

G. Properly use the numeric keypad for numeric data entry

Data Summary10% of students demonstrated proficiency and passed the course with speeds of 45+ wpm with greater than 90% accuracy.

10% of students demonstrated proficiency and passed the course with speeds of 45+ wpm with 70-89% accuracy.

75% of students passed the course with speeds between 20-44 wpm with at least 75% accuracy.

5% of students typed under 20 wpm or did not complete the course.
Analysis SummaryGiven a 1-minute timed paragraph consisting of 25-70 words, student can complete keying the paragraph with no more than 1 error.

Student given a 3-minute and 5-minute timed paragraph should be able to type with at least 90% accuracy.
Next Steps PlannedStudents could use more individualized speed and accuracy builders before testing; may want to supplement in-class lessons by using keyboarding websites to reinforce keyboarding drills covered in class.

An additional tool would be the use of the Office Proficiency Assessment & Certification (OPAC) System. OPAC's complete suite of validated tests include typing speed and accuracy, MS Windows, Word and many other applications. This software measures the most critical skills and abilities required in today's administrative and clerical positions. The system motivates business and career development students to do their best; and the OPAC assessments offer immediate feedback of a student's skill level and progress. Ideally, we could have this software available in our business computer labs by Spring 2014.

Changes

DetailsNew activity which is a practical application of the SLOs: Challenged students to attempt additional 5-minute timings in order to earn an official Typing Certificate for their future job search. Many employers, such as City and County of San Francisco, require verification of typing speed and accuracy for administrative and dispatcher job openings (typically 40-50 net words per minute desirable). Approximately 2-6 job seekers drop-in each week at the CCSF John Adams Center to obtain a typing certificate.

Tentative Future Plans

TermSpring 2014
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
More DetailsPlans include touching base with colleagues who teach this course to see if their textbook/software program is proving to be effective for their students. We may want to implement the use of the same program in order to maintain consistency at all CCSF centers where BOSS 5501 keyboarding courses are offered. This would be especially helpful for those students who need more than one semester to complete the course--sometimes at more than one CCSF center.

Additional Highlights

Students who demonstrated proficiency and passed the course report that the keyboarding skills they developed were useful in completing assignments for other courses. For others, the skills gained improved their job performance (especially in administrative support) as well as for their personal use.
