NURS 51 - Basic Medical-Surgical Nursing - Stage 4 - Agnes Leong

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionStudent satisfaction survey included some of these questions: Were the case studies helpful in reinforcing the lesson? Were the online quizzes on Insight helpful? How could the lectures be improved?
Learning OutcomesA. Plan and execute competent, safe, nursing care by demonstrating an appropriate level of knowledge, psychomotor, communication skills, positive attitudes, and increased cultural sensitivity for the adult and older adult patient.

C. Apply knowledge learned in nursing skills lab, nursing fundamentals and pharmacology courses when caring for adults and older adults.

E. Prepare individuals for diagnostic testing and execute safe post test care and interpret findings of these and other common diagnostic tests for detecting dysfunction as they relate to specific patient contexts.

N. Identify medical and psychosocial conditions most prevalent in the elderly and describe clinical features and management strategies for them.

O. Demonstrate evidence of clinical preparation and proficiency with the nursing process when researching patient case history.

P. Demonstrate competence with informatics by gathering accurate data from the medical records, medication record, treatment orders, lab values, and results from other diagnostic tests.

S. Demonstrates an increasing ability to respond to multiple and competing demands by prioritizing and triaging appropriately.

T. Synthesize data, including assessment findings with knowledge of pathophysiology and apply theory to practice.

Face-to-face meetings

Data Summary1. Majority of students passed the unit exams.

2. Not all students were consistent in completing the online quizzes.

3. Clinical evaluations were completed by both students and clinical instructors.

4. Student satisfaction surveys had negative response toward SimChart.

5. Student satisfaction surveys had positive response toward case studies and quizzes.
Analysis Summary1. Data analysis of exams revealed a class average of 84% passing rate. Grades on exams 75% or higher indicate outcome achievement.

2. The average passing rate for quizzes was 70%. Quizzes were given on Insight and were optional. Its score was not included in the total course score. 4 out of 45 students who scored less than 75% on an unit quiz resulted with the corresponding exam score of 72-78%. 7 out of the 45 students who did not take a particular unit quiz had a corresponding exam score of 76-84%. 84% was considered low for 2 of those 7 students.

3. Student self-assessments revealed his/her strengths and weaknesses. Improvement plans were outlined by the clinical instructor for each student.

4. SimChart was implemented and all course and clinical instructors believed it did not accurately reflect the student’s knowledge of the patient’s condition, medications, and patient care plans. The student satisfaction surveys revealed 62% believed SimChart did not aid in understanding the patient’s diagnosis, medications, or help plan the patient’s care. 62% stated SimChart was not similar to the hospital’s electronic medical documentation software.

5. Student satisfaction survey evaluating this course revealed 93% believed case studies were helpful in reinforcing the lessons and wanted every lecture to include a case study. 93% believed the online quizzes were helpful but desired more practice questions.
Next Steps PlannedImplement the following in the Fall 2013 semester: Modify some case studies to include current nursing trends and add a case study to each lecture. Modify some practice quizzes to include more clinical reasoning. Delete SimCharts and create a new electronic template for clinical patient presentations.

Changes

DetailsImplemented online quizzes and exams, SimChart (electronic medical documentation of patient care provided), clinical reflective journal, added more case studies to my lectures, and assigned a group research paper.
Learning OutcomesRefer to previous answers.

Additional Highlights

Writing the SLOs at the beginning of the each lecture handout helped the students focus on the key elements. The SLO assessments brought attention to the strengths and weaknesses of my course. By implementing small changes, my course delivery and student success are gradually improving.
