HIT 50A - Medical Terminology - Stage 4 - Peggy Guichard

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Feedback from collaboration with other departments
  • External (outside CCSF) data (such as licensing exam and placement rates)
Assessment DescriptionDeveloped eight system based case studies to see if students were able to follow the patient medical history, chief complaint, and treatment described. The proper interpretation of medical word components allowed students to respond from 10 to 17 questions related to each case study. The case studies became more complex during the semester and positive responses increased as students became more familiar with the format of the reports, where to locate essential information, and understanding of compound medical terms and procedures. 87% of students were able to answer all questions correctly by the completion of the semester.

Student workbooks for the Gastrointestinal System and the Female Reproductive System were revised and additional student worksheets added.

Data Summary87% of the HIT 50A students from both the day and evening classes were able to answer all of the case study questions correctly. This represented understanding of the material, use of medical records/reports to locate information and proper interpretation of medical abbreviations in context. I presented students with simple case studies at six weeks into the semester and and had +/- 65% correct answers. By week 15, students were able to read and comprehend complex case studies and respond to questions appropriately.
Analysis SummaryGrades for students completing HIT50A reflect attainment of required knowledge to correctly understand the medical terminology used in the health care environment.
Next Steps PlannedDuring FAll 2013 I plan to revise the workbooks for the Male Reproductive and Cardiovascular Systems. Since the use of additional case histories increased student understanding of medical terms, I shall develop medical histories specific to the workbooks to be revised.

Tentative Future Plans

TermSpring 2014
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsI shall compare the test results from the use of the new workbooks (GI and Female) with the test results from the workbooks currently used for Male and Cardio, before revision. I shall then look at test results after students use the new Male and Cardio workbooks to see there is a comparable increase in test scores.

Additional Highlights

The incresed use of case histories (discharge summary, operative report, consultations) make the medical language seem more 'real' when linked to actual patient scenarios.
