DSPS 4305 - High School Level Learning Strategies - Stage 5 - Maral Good

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
Assessment DescriptionStudents completed pretest survey on entry to class to assess awareness of learning style and strategies. An example yes/no question would be: "Do you know your learning style?" Students later completed a narrative, assignment describing their learning style and identifying strategies to use. Sample questions include: "How does this learning style fit you?" and "How do you learn best?" After selecting and applying a strategy to an assignment, students completed a postest survey which included questions such as asking the student to describe how the strategy was helpful, if it was a good strategy for their learning style, and if they would use that strategy again.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With

Faculty and staff within our department

Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Shared document files
Data Summary90% of Students independently completed narrative self assessment of learning styles identifying and describing their learning styles, which was up from 65% of students who identified their own learning style on the first day survey.

83% of students who stayed in the class and had 16 or more hours of attendance completed at least one post-use survey. Out of those completed surveys, 99% indicated that the strategy chosen and applied was helpful and fit their learning style and they would use it again.
Analysis SummaryStudents have achieved significant progress with SLO 1 if they can independently give a narrative description identifying and describing their own learning styles and needs. Completion of one or more post-use survey strategies indicating that chosen strategies were helpful and met their learning style indicates outcome achievement for the second SLO within the current semester's assignments.

Overall, 90% of the class was able to at least partially achieve learning outcome 1, and 45% of all students enrolled in the class showed achievement in learning outcome 2. (82% of the students who remained in the class past 16 hours of attendance). But only 25% of students completed more than one post-use strategy. The data suggests that students are not adapting new strategies quickly, not trying out many new strategies, or not following through on the strategies completed.
Next Steps PlannedNext semester, 3 changes are planned for this course:

1) every task students work on in the class will require that students indicate the strategy attempted or applied .

2) Additional reference materials on strategies will be developed for individual, spontaneous review.

3) The weekly mini-lecture topics will expand to include more information on different aspects of learning styles.

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
More DetailsWe plan to incorporate tracking sheet to record teacher observations of successful student application of learning strategies.

We will try to again incorporate a more simplified student directed tracking sheet for students to record strategies they have tried.

We will adjust the strategy specific surveys to try to better capture student strategy use.
