HIST 41A - The AfricanAmerican in the United States - Stage 5 - Tarik Farrar

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment DescriptionWe conducted Pre and Post surveys for this course as well as utilize assignments and exams that challenged students to use knowledge from the whole semester. For example, students conducted a final research presentation answering a larger historical question and in another instructors class the final exams consisted of questions from past exams.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With
  • Instructors of the same course (at CCSF)
  • Faculty and staff within our department
  • Faculty and staff from related programs/departments
  • Faculty and staff from across the college
Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Website review and commentary
  • Shared document files
Data SummaryThat the majority of students were unable to answer questions 4 and 1. This is most likely due to the wording and the different ways the instructors refer to the particular topics. The number of students who answered incorrectly did drop by the end of the semster
Analysis SummaryThat the surveys are not the best way to assess the Major SLO's which emphasize more complex themes and critical analysis skills. Much of what students gain is not reflected in the survey which is focused on course content. The survey does not reflect the different ways each instructor approaches historical topics, so the survey seems removed from the course in many ways.
Next Steps Planned1) Student demographic survey that will address economic, skill level, and student experience in addition to assessing course content.
