Assessment

Assessment Methods

Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs

Assessment DescriptionSLOs A, B and D were assessed by multiple choice questions on the final exam. Example questions:

1. The SI units of potential energy are

(a) Joules (b) Watts (c) Newtons (d) Joules/sec (e) None of these

2. A 0.1-kg steel ball is dropped straight down onto a hard, horizontal floor and bounces straight up. The ball’s speed just before and just after impact with the floor is 10 m/s. Determine the magnitude of the impulse delivered to the floor by the steel ball.

(a)2 N.s (b) 100 N  s (c) 1 N  s (d) 10 N  s
Learning OutcomesA. Demonstrate familiarity with the SI (International System) system of units and dimensional analysis.

B. Apply basic vector mathematics to physics problems such as the addition of forces or the resolution of velocities into components.

D. Demonstrate conceptual understanding in kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, rotational motion and electricity.

Changes

Details1. I changed the way I taught two topics in particular.

2. Since one of my observations from previous semesters was that of retention, I made sure I tested key concepts repeatedly throughout the semester via quizzes, homework, in-class assignments and lecture interactions.
